Untitled #802, 2009
Mark Weiss

David Byrne of the Talking Heads has said that “riding a bike through [a city] is a trip inside the collective psyche of a compacted group of people.” In this series of photographs taken with a studio camera super-clamped to the front of his bike, Mark Weiss provides an intimate view of the many-faceted metropolis, from deep within its throbbing arteries. “It was important for me to get my hands in the shot…I wanted to convey my experience whizzing around, getting squished by trucks.” With the camera release in his mouth, the longtime New York City cyclist rode the length of iconic 5th Ave, among other areas, snapping the street scene frame by frame and emerging with a vivid portrait of the rider and his city in perpetual motion.
