I recently discovered a coworker who lives close by, and she has been nice enough to offer carpooling to work twice now. She carpools with her son, Jared, as he conveniently goes to school where his mom works. A very funny, smart 4th grader. Tonight, I met her son, Lucas, who currently attends day care in Culver City.
Seeing the dynamics between all three of them was so much fun- they’re a very communicative family. It’s something I don’t see in my own family very often where the adults talk disproportionately less than the kids. But both kids were excited to see their mom after a day in school and to talk about their days, or about the new Kirby game on Wii, an early Christmas gift which Mom failed to hide. Mom kept them engaged with questions and showed genuine interest in what they had to say.
And the sweetest moment I’ve experienced in a long time was after a quick moment of silence. Lucas says, “Mommy?”
“I love you.”
“Love you, too, Bubba.”
As a parent, that must be one of the biggest moments in life- when your child tells you they love you, not out of routine or obligation. But just because.
Great Monday. Beautiful LA skies and seeing a cute little kid appreciate his mother.
Hope you’ve said “I love you” to your mom or dad lately. They’d love to hear it too, just because.
